Washington, DC LGBT ISSUES

The attorneys of Kuder, Smollar, Friedman & Mihalik, PC have extensive experience working with LGBT clients. We understand the commonalities and differences in the legal landscape faced by LGBT families compared with that of opposite-sex couples and their families – and we are acutely sensitive to the stress and sense of loss that many of our clients, whether in traditional or non-traditional families, are facing when they seek our legal counsel. The law is gradually progressing toward greater equality for LGBT families and developing just and equitable ways to address issues of particular relevance to the LGBT community – including issues around family formation involving same-sex parents and the dissolution of marriages, civil unions, and domestic partnerships. We are closely monitoring and applauding that progress, and our attorneys combine decades of experience in all areas of family law with an understanding of issues particularly affecting LGBT families today to best serve our clients.

In addition to traditional advocacy, the firm has distinguished itself through its work in areas offering alternatives to litigation. Because of the persistent ambiguities in the law regarding LGBT families these alternative methods to dispute resolution might in some cases be particularly well-suited to resolving issues in LGBT families, and we discuss these options with all clients where the situation might be appropriate. The lawyers at Kuder, Smollar, Friedman & Mihalik, PC have years of experience helping clients navigate settlement negotiations and more structured mediation processes and have served as mediators in helping others resolve disputes. Kuder, Smollar, Friedman & Mihalik, PC lawyers are also extensively trained and experienced in the emerging area of Collaborative Practice.
