Theresa Mihalik Lectures on Law for Non-Lawyers

On Monday, September 29, 2014, firm principal Theresa M. Mihalik lectured at the D.C. Academy of Collaborative Professionals law discussion titled “Law for Non-Lawyers.”

“Law for Non-Lawyers” is a seminar that provides Collaborative professionals from disciplines outside the law (e.g., mental health professionals, financial experts, real estate and mortgage brokers) with basic information about the laws that apply to custody, child support, spousal support, and division of property.

This seminar included presentations on similarities and differences in how the laws are written in each of the three jurisdictions in our area: Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.  Ms. Mihalik spoke about District of Columbia law (Ms. Mihalik is licensed in both the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Virginia), covering many issues including grounds for divorce, spousal support, child support, property distribution, mediation and arbitration, separation agreements and settlement agreements, tax issues related to support and asset transfers, social security benefits, custody, visitation, and attorney-client privilege.
